Tags and terminology

Release names compress source, format, language, edition and status information into a single directory name. Meanings vary by category and ruleset, so the same word is not always valid in every part of the Scene.

Replacement and status tags

Tag Meaning
PROPER A justified replacement for a technically flawed release from another group.
REPACK A corrected package issued by the same group.
RERIP Content ripped again to correct a problem with the earlier rip.
REAL Distinguishes the actual replacement when an earlier release used an incorrect status tag.
READNFO Important context or justification is provided in the NFO.

Fix tags

REMUX Video, audio and selected streams remuxed without re-encoding. It normally appears together with the actual source, such as BluRay.REMUX.

WEB versus WEB-DL

Formal Scene WEB rules use WEB.H264 / WEB.H265 for untouched files and WEBRip.x264 / WEBRip.x265 for transcoded releases. WEB-DL is widespread in P2P naming, but it is not the primary tag used by that Scene ruleset.
